Korean company Samsung is weighing the pros and cons of launching its ambitious upcoming tri-fold phone in the US later this year.

CNN Business quoted a person familiar with the company's plans as saying that Samsung is currently determining which markets to launch its dual-hinge tri-fold phone in, and that the US is one of the markets under consideration.

No tri-fold phone is currently available in the US, meaning Samsung could be the first company to launch such a phone in the US market.

Chinese company Huawei already sells the tri-fold Mate XT, but its availability outside China is extremely limited.

If Samsung goes ahead with the widespread launch of its tri-fold phone, reportedly called the Galaxy TriFold, in the United States, it would be a significant milestone for both the company and the broader smartphone industry, which has suffered from a lack of new designs for a while.

However, several factors could influence Samsung's decision to launch its tri-fold phone in the United States.

Due to the phone's complex design and advanced engineering, the tri-fold phone won't be cheap; reports indicate it will be priced around $3,000, putting it out of reach for most consumers.

Because it's a pricey first-generation device, demand for the phone is expected to be limited, making limited availability even more likely.

Leaks so far indicate that Samsung's tri-fold phone will be available in China and South Korea, with rumors suggesting a launch in October or November.
