After images and news spread about the presence of columns under the pyramid of King Khafre in the historic Giza pyramids area, sparking widespread controversy among Egyptians, Egyptologist Zahi Hawass denied the allegations, asserting that they were merely "rumors."
In a statement on his official Facebook page on Saturday, Hawass said, "The rumors that have spread about the pyramids and the presence of columns under the pyramid of King Khafre are completely baseless. There is no scientific evidence to support this claim, and there are no missions working on the pyramid of King Khafre at the present time."
He added, "These rumors were spread by specialists who know nothing about ancient Egyptian civilization and the history of the pyramids." He pointed out that the Supreme Council of Antiquities has not issued these individuals any permits for any work inside the pyramid of King Khafre.
The archaeologist confirmed that "the base of the pyramid of King Khafre was carved from rock to a height of approximately 8 meters, and there are no columns beneath this base, according to scientific studies and research conducted on the pyramid," according to the statement.
He also pointed out that "no radar devices were used inside the pyramid, and all claims about the presence of columns beneath the pyramid are baseless. There is no scientific evidence to support this claim, and there are no missions currently working on the pyramid of King Khafre."
The Egyptian expert said that "what was said is an attempt to undermine ancient Egyptian civilization, and these attempts are a failure. These rumors will be consigned to the dustbin of history," he said.
A Huge City Under the Pyramids of Giza
This came after social media users circulated news of the "discovery of a huge city beneath the Pyramids of Giza," based on a study in which researchers from Italy and Scotland claimed "the existence of a huge underground city extending over 6,500 feet." They indicated that they used radar equipment to create high-resolution images of the depths of the earth, which they claimed revealed the existence of this city.
According to the study, "there are eight vertical cylindrical structures extending over 2,100 feet beneath the pyramid, in addition to more unknown structures at a depth of 4,000 feet." The study indicated the presence of five identical buildings beneath the base of the Khafre Pyramid connected by geometric paths, beneath which lie eight vertical cylindrical shafts.
It's worth noting that much controversy arises from time to time regarding the pyramids, which were built approximately 4,500 years ago.
