Astronauts Butch Wilmer and Suni Williams returned to Earth aboard a SpaceX capsule that crashed off the coast of Florida after nine months in space.

Live footage showed the moment they lifted off from the International Space Station.

Wilmer and Williams arrived at the station in early June on the first crewed test flight of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.

Their mission was supposed to last only one week, but numerous technical issues with the spacecraft forced them to stay in space longer.

Last September, two more astronauts arrived at the space station aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, leaving two seats free for Wilmer and Williams to return to Earth.

Both astronauts have flown to space several times and are experienced spacewalkers.

The Crew 10 crew, including NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nicole Yers, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday, replacing the Crew 9 crew.
