The U.S. Department of Energy has launched the Quantum Genesis Q Competition, offering up to $215 million in planned funding to companies working toward scientifically relevant quantum computers.
The target? Systems with at least 100 logical qubits capable of performing hundreds of millions of fault-tolerant operations.
DOE is also planning another $45 million for National Laboratories to help validate and verify the systems.
Applications are due October 19, 2026, putting the quantum-computing industry on a clearly defined path toward the department's 2028 technical target.
The next few years could reveal how close the technology is to reliable, error-corrected quantum computing for scientific research.
